i really enjoy digging into Scripture and working toward a sermon or lesson. i get energized by reading and re-reading a passage, and thinking about how God is trying to speak to me today through it. i love coming back later, and seeing something else that i didn’t before. i love the feel of connecting passages that run the same theme, and having another pop into my head, so i have to go hunt it down as well. some people i’m sure would say i was nuts on this account. but i must confess, i really enjoy it. it’s like digging through treasure to find that one gem that will stand out. right now, i’m taking a break from this sunday’s sermon and abf lesson to let my mind wander for a minute.
i usually have about 3,000 to 3,300 words in a sermon, and that will run me about mmmm, 25 minutes. right now, i’m at about 3,600 words and need to see where, if possible, i can pare things down anymore. i’ve already gone through and trimmed once. plus, i know that i will say more than what i write out ahead of time anyway. i want to be respectful of people’s time, but i also want to be respectful of the text and to let it speak. scripture always pulls rank there 🙂
well, i need to fix some lunch and then get back to it…
