late night with st. benedict

i am not a late night person anymore. i remember many nights in college up until 3-4 in the morning and then only going to bed because i knew i would fall asleep in class if i didn’t. so it was more a sleep of known need than actual need at the time. i enjoyed being up and out late, and 11 at night seemed like the early portion of the evening. the internet was fairly new, and there were lots of stupid things to enjoy like pictures of people hiding old meat in public places and watching the response of passers by…

it was a different time.

today, i’m about shot at 10pm. i could probably go to sleep around 9:30 if i was given the opportunity. but seeing as that is the only time of day i have where it is just me and beth, i’ll stay up later. children seem to kill quiet conversation time 🙂

but i was reading benedict’s rule today, in particular the portions about the night office. seeing as i am quick to sleep, and tend to wake up early. i think i may start embracing the early morning a little better, and start my day in a more structured and, therefore, God-honoring manner.

So, i guess i can set up a schedule to follow based on his readings for the vigils, and run from there. i feel like i can assure my time for my daily readings will be better, and more sincere.

if you are and early morning reader, how is it working for you? any tips or suggestions?
