pretenders fool only themselves

(unmarked journal entry – presumably matthew 21)

which did what the father asked? being born into a repentant household doesn’t give you a contrite heart and a broken spirit. no one gets to go to heaven simply because they acknowledge God. on the contrary, the heart that pleases God is the heart that knows its sin and knows God’s authority.

God doesn’t simply weigh us on the scales to determine our love for Him; He lets us make a display with our lives and hearts and the results are obvious. God is not mocked, or fooled by empty words and hollow shows of obedience. God knows our hearts and our deepest seated motives. if we are following Him with a sincere heart, both He and the people around us can see it plainly.

people can see it because they see God acting through us. things are different than what the world’s followers have to offer. there is no shortage of pretenders out there. they are easy to spot because they look just like everyone else…
