Who is the master? // Matthew 24

“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.” Matthew 24:45-46 NIV

Sometimes we forget what we are about. Sometimes we focus on our own agendas, our own self-appointed tasks rather than the appointments given to us by our Master. Sometimes we concentrate more and more on what we find for our hands and hearts to do than we know our Master has required of us. And before we begin to quote that old excuse that we are not saved by what we do, we need to remember that our salvation came at a price, that we have been purchased, and that we are not our own. Yes, Jesus paid the price, and grace covers us, but we cannot presume for even a moment to take advantage of grace, or to tell our Lord and Master that His time table isn’t going to work for us.

We must be mindful, every day, that we are no longer slaves to sin, but instead, we are slaves to God. This is a joyful thing, and a glad reminder, but it is truth in all of its parts. Just like a lump of clay has no right to tell the op otter what it shall become, we have surrendered our lives to Christ to be used for His good purposes. The sinful nature inside of us is going to continue to tell us that we should get to do what we want, when we want to do it, but Scripture tells us that our Master is going to return and that we have been given work to do for Him until that time.

The question is, do we want to be found faithfully serving Him or doing our own thing? Do we want to be found working at the position and tasks assigned to us, or asleep at our posts? It’s a pretty simple question and it is very easy to answer. We know what we ought to do, and so we should do it, not out of obligation or in an attempt to repay grace, but out of love and thanksgiving.

We have been rescued and shown the greatest kindness and love that can ever be experienced. We are small, finite and as C.S. Lewis called it, ‘bent.’ We are out of whack and need a gentle hand to correct our heart paths. And our Master, Jesus, has done just that and offers that grace to any and all who would come to Him, baptized into His death and resurrection. And when we were bought, that was it, we handed the reins over to Him, and we agreed to live for Him from that moment on, joyfully redeemed and daily being renewed.

So, be faithful to the Master today. Set aside worldly distractions, and let. Him guide the moments of your life with the tasks that really matter most. Go in His love to do His work in His timing, and do not presume to advise Him on how it ought to be done. Simply serve faithfully, trusting in His will.
