There are two paths in life // 2 Peter // Book of Common Prayer

“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.” 2 Peter 1:3, 4 ESV

Our western culture continues on in its curious philosophy that truth is relative. People choose a ‘truth that is true for me.’ and even if the evidence is stacked against them, they continue on in their ‘truth’ unfazed. Scripture tells us plainly that there are two paths, a wide and a narrow, a path that either shows a partaking in the divine nature or the way of corruption and sinful desire. We do not get to decide which is which. They simply already exist as such.

David sang many psalms about those who followed the corruption of sin. They are simply called ‘enemies’ because they oppose God’s ways.

“Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.” Psalm 2:10-12 ESV

The pathway to righteousness is always open. But mankind in our arrogance see the ways we choose as right simply because it is what we have chosen. It’s my decision, my truth and so this is the right choice for me. God’s wrath and the punishment of the unjust isn’t optional. We cannot live any way we please and expect it to be okay in the end.

“O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame?
How long will you love vain words and seek after lies?
Selah
But know that the Lord has set apart the godly for himself;
the Lord hears when I call to him.
Be angry, and do not sin;
ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent.
Selah
Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the Lord.” Psalm 4:2-5 ESV

The only security we have in life is the security that comes from knowing God and living according to His ways. God sets apart those who listen to. His voice and live according to His precepts.

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.” Psalm 1:1, 2 ESV

Because we all choose our way, we will deal with the consequences, for good or bad, of that choice. God is already victorious. The provision for grace has already been made. We simply await the day and moment of His choosing for judgment.

“This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’” The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.” Matthew 21:4-11 ESV

Jesus has already entered in humility and grace. Our role as we await Hs entry in victory is. To GoLove people in His Name, making disciples that make disciples. We serve our King, our Master and our Authority according to His ways and His laws. We do into to get to choose truth for ourselves. We either choose His way, the way of love and grace and mercy, or we choose our own path that is destined for destruction.

Our prayer should echo the heart of God, and that is for all those who wander to find their rest in Him through the blood of Christ.
