1 John 2 // Remain in the truth

“24 What you have heard from the beginning must remain in you. If what you have heard from the beginning remains in you, then you will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that He Himself made to us: eternal life. 26 I have written these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.

27 The anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you dont need anyone to teach you. Instead, His anointing teaches you about all things and is true and is not a lie; just as He has taught you, remain in Him.

28 So now, little children, remain in Him, so that when He appears we may have boldness and not be ashamed before Him at His coming. 29 If you know that He is righteous, you know this as well: Everyone who does what is right has been born of Him.”
1 John 2:24-29

This idea of ‘what you heard in the beginning’ remaining in us is very important. John, the Holy Spirit speaking through him, saw and understood that over time it is very possible for us to begin to acclimate to to world around us, and so we adapt and change and compromise to make that interaction with the world easier. It simply means that we are keeping the original meaning of he Gospel message, and the expectations of the life that follows baptism as laid out in Scripture.

Too much compromise goes on in the lives of Christians and so-called Christians/nominal Christians. Too many efforts have been made to be accommodating and the message has become confused and wandered from the truth and is no longer the Gospel that Christ gave us. We must remain in Him, we must take what we read in Scripture to heart and weigh everything against it to see if it is excellent or praiseworthy or to see if it needs to be done away with. We do not look at Scripture and weigh it against the world and see what bits mesh and which ones don’t and then keep what makes sense in the context of today, leaving the rest behind. That would be a Gospel of our own making and man-made ‘good news’ is not the true Good News.

If that message remains in us, undefiled, then we are on the right path, walking as Jesus walked. If we remain in Him, we will be ready for Him at His coming. If we remain in Him, we will be an accurate representation of grace to others, a true purveyor of love and truth. If we are to GoLove as Christ’s ambassadors to the world, we need to stick to what He said, remaining in Him and in His teachings, walking in the truth.
