Mark 1:35-45//Searching for Jesus

“35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He got up, went out, and made His way to a deserted place. And He was praying there. 36 Simon and his companions went searching for Him. 37 They found Him and said, “Everyone’s looking for You!”

38 And He said to them, “Let’s go on to the neighboring villages so that I may preach there too. This is why I have come.” 39 So He went into all of Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.

40 Then a man with a serious skin disease came to Him and, on his knees, begged Him: “If You are willing, You can make me clean.”
41 Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand and touched him. “I am willing, He told him. Be made clean.” 42 Immediately the disease left him, and he was healed. 43 Then He sternly warned him and sent him away at once, 44 telling him, “See that you say nothing to anyone; but go and show yourself to the priest, and offer what Moses prescribed for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.” 45 Yet he went out and began to proclaim it widely and to spread the news, with the result that Jesus could no longer enter a town openly. But He was out in deserted places, and they would come to Him from everywhere.”
Mark 1:35-45

When Jesus is really and truly presented, when our actions and words are authentically pointed toward Him, when our life’s message is centered on Him, people are going to be drawn to Him at work in us. Maybe they come curious, asking questions. Maybe they ask for us to pray with or for them. Maybe they just start gravitating toward us, seeking silently to be around someone who obviously cares for others. However it comes across, when Jesus is lifted up, people are drawn to Him.

The people of Capernaum and the neighboring towns flocked to Him because He was meeting needs, helping others and speaking the truth with authority. Because He was open, honest and straightforward with the truth of God, people were drawn in, like eyes to a candle in a dark room.

We don’t have to put on a show, be a ‘super-Christian’ (whatever that means) or have a multimillion dollar complex of lights and sounds to draw people to Jesus. Authentically lived lives, humbly, lovingly proclaiming the Gospel is all that is needed. If we know it’s about Him and we live/talk/preach/serve like it’s all about Him, then people will be drawn to Him. That is why He told us to GoLove others the way He did.
It’s not about us, how impressive or unimpressive we are, but it is all about Him. John the Baptist had it right, ‘He must become greater, I must become less.’ That is the key, Jesus comes first, and we live that truth in His love daily.
