Psalm 71 // A prayer for support

“1 Lord, I seek refuge in You;
let me never be disgraced.
2 In Your justice, rescue and deliver me;
listen closely to me and save me.
3 Be a rock of refuge for me,
where I can always go.
Give the command to save me,
for You are my rock and fortress.
4 Deliver me, my God, from the power of the wicked,
from the grasp of the unjust and oppressive.
5 For You are my hope, Lord God,
my confidence from my youth.
6 I have leaned on You from birth;
You took me from my mothers womb.
My praise is always about You.
7 I have become an ominous sign to many,
but You are my strong refuge.
8 My mouth is full of praise
and honor to You all day long.”
Psalm 71:1-8

And the psalmist continues for two more stanzas of this length and theme to describe just how good God has been, how he relies on Him and how God has been the One and will continue to be the One that redeems, renews and retires him. God is his strength, his refuge, his only support that he can count on.

We would all do well to rely on God, intentionally, like this every day.
When we try to stand on our own is when our weaknesses are most apparent. But when we gather under the wings of our Master, we find strength and hope in spades.

I try too hard, too often to stand on my own. It is God who maintains me and gives me strength. It is God who does all things well. Praise Him! Bless His holy Name!
